Account ballance

I just started using gnucash 2.2.1 a couple of months ago. Last month my checking account balanced, but this month it is out of balance by a few dollars. I see that the starting balance is off by the same amount, is there a way to change the starting balance, otherwise, I can't close the reconcile window. I am also still using Quicken, and it balances just like it is supposed to.
