Talk:Concept Guide draft/Overview

From GnuCash

So I have some questions about some of the statements in this documentation.

1. The little (R) symbol is used inconsistantly with respect to Quicken and MSMoney on the page. I've seen this type of thing done in some documents as "Quicken and MS Money are trademarks of their respective owners" or some similar statement.

2. Are we going to try to use a consistant voice in the whole document? Sometimes the document speaks directly to the user "Helps you manage your money" and other times it uses the third person voice "GnuCash menus conform with the GNOME Human Interface Guidelines" It doesn't matter that much to me, but I can just see my high school English teacher cringing as we switch between 2nd and 3rd person voice.

I agree, Should be same all through the document. /Bengt

3. In the Multi-platform compatibility section, I'm about to change it to v2.0.x. What versions are fully supported in 2.0.x? What does it mean to be fully supported?

4. Does 2.0.x track payroll? I consider "tracking payroll" to specifically mean helping calculate payroll taxes. I believe there was some discussion on the user list several months ago about this, and GnuCash 1.8.x most certainly does not do it, although there was a user who wanted to try to add a plug in module to do it. I'm planning to delete the statement "Payroll: GnuCash can track company payroll"

No, 2.x does not track payroll. --Cstim 03:52, 11 April 2006 (EDT)

5. There's a statement that says, "Double Entry" When enabled, every..." Is it possible to disable double entry? I hope not. I'm going to delete the "When enabled" clause.

Right, in 2.x it is no longer possible to disable this. (It used to be possible in 1.8.x, IIRC) --Cstim 03:52, 11 April 2006 (EDT)

6. I've often thought that a *real* quick start guide could be useful. Sometimes I lie awake at night compising it in my head when I can't sleep. If I ever did get out of bed and write one, could a link be added near the top of this document? I've found that people who want gnucash to total their last year's expenses on April 14th don't want to read about all the nice international features of gnucash before they learn how to enter their first double-entry transaction.

This sounds like a very good idea. If we can create a short document, a few pages, or perhaps add a chapter after Overview (Quick Start). /Bengt

My thanks to everyone who has worked on this program and its documentation. I've found both to be very helpful over the years. --Beth
